NEW SWINE FLU MUTATION 'FAR MORE DEADLY'

SWINE flu has been discovered in birds, prompting fears that a more dangerous and easily transmitted strain will emerge.

Health experts last night confirmed that the H1N1 pig flu virus has infected turkeys. It is the first case of H1N1 in birds.

Scientists warned the outbreak in poultry could lead to a deadly flu outbreak if it mixes with lethal avian flu.

Tests have shown sick turkeys at two farms in Chile were struck down with the swine flu virus that has caused a pandemic in humans.

Britain’s leading flu expert, Professor John Oxford, said: “The last thing we want is a universal virus that goes everywhere.

“The avian flu virus is embedded in birds in Egypt and south-east Asia and this outbreak could easily hop across and mix with this, increasing the risk of the swine flu virus mixing with avian flu which is more dangerous.”

Experts with the United Nations in Rome and the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta are now monitoring the outbreak in turkeys, which has so far caused only relatively mild symptoms in the birds.

Mr Oxford, Professor of Virology at St Bartholomew’s and the Royal London Hospital, said this meant cases could be missed.

“It is unsettling that the animals are not dying as this means it is harder to detect. If you don’t recognise the danger you are not likely to take action.” The Rome-based UN Food and Agriculture Organisation also warned that the virus could become more potent.

A statement said: “The current H1N1 virus strain is a mixture of human, pig and bird genes and has proved to be very contagious but no more deadly than common seasonal flu viruses. However, it could become more dangerous if it adds virulence by combining with H5N1, commonly known as avian flu, which is far more deadly but harder to pass along among humans.”

Last week Britain accepted its first batches of swine flu vaccine, as the Government began to arm itself against a second wave of the pandemic in winter.

The World Health Organisation has been warning governments for months to prepare for a resurgence of the virus in the winter.

The doses arrived as millions of schoolchildren prepared to return to school in the next two weeks, with concerns that the virus could spread easily between classrooms.

A Health Department spokeswoman said the vaccine was delivered by US pharmaceutical company Baxter and it could be approved for public distribution by early October.

The vaccine will initially be used on at-risk groups, such as people with asthma and diabetes, officials said. Pregnant women, health workers and people with underlying health problems will get the vaccines before the rest of the population.

Britain is the European country hardest hit by the virus. So far 66 people have died.

Police chief: 7 found slain at Ga. mobile home

Police chief: 7 found slain at Ga. mobile home

BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Seven people were found slain and two critically injured Saturday at a mobile home located on a historic plantation in southeastern Georgia, police said.

Glynn County Police Chief Matt Doering called it the worst mass slaying in his 25 years of police work in this coastal Georgia county. He wouldn't say how the victims died and released few other details.

"This is a record for us. We've never had such an incident with so many victims," Doering told reporters. "It's not a scene that I would want anybody to see."

Doering said police were working on leads to identify a suspect but that no arrests had been made Saturday afternoon. He said a family member called 911 at about 8 a.m. Saturday.

The two injured victims were taken to a Savannah hospital 60 miles away and were in critical condition, Doering said.

Doering said some of the victims had been tentatively identified, but he would not release any names or ages. He said only that the victims ranged "from a young age to a very old age."

The home where the bodies were found is part of a mobile home park consisting of about 100 spaces and nestled among centuries-old live oak trees near the center of New Hope Plantation, according to the plantation's Web site.

The 1,100 acre tract a few miles north of the port city of Brunswick is all that remains of a Crown grant made in 1763 to Henry Laurens, who later succeeded John Hancock as president of the Continental Congress in 1777.

Laurens obtained control of the South Altamaha river lands and named it New Hope Plantation, according to the plantation's Web site.

Lisa Vizcaino, who has lived at New Hope for three years, said the management works hard to keep troublemakers out of the mobile home park and that it tends to be quiet.

"New Hope isn't rundown or trashy at all," Vizcaino said. "It's the kind of place where you can actually leave your keys in the car and not worry about anything."

Vizcaino said she didn't know the victims and heard nothing unusual when she woke up at 7 a.m. Saturday morning. After word of the slayings spread, she said, the park was quieter than usual.

"Everybody had pretty much stayed in their houses," Vizcaino said. "Normally you would see kids outside, but everybody's been pretty much on lockdown."

Jaycee Lee Dugard

Jaycee Lee Dugard, the kidnapped girl found after 18 years, was living in tents and outbuildings in a secluded compound in her captors’ backyard.

Dugard was kidnapped in 1991, at age 11, by Phillip Garrido and his wife Nancy as she waited for a school bus. For 18 years she has lived as a sex slave with two daughters Garrido fathered in a complex of tents and shacks in the Garrido’s backyard.

The kidnapping case was broken last week when officers at the University of California at Berkeley became suspicious of Phillip Garrido’s behavior when he arrived at the campus with the two girls, ages 11 and 15. A background check revealed that Garrido was a sex offender, and subsequently led to his arrest and Jaycee Lee Dugard’s freedom.

Dugard, now 29, was reunited with her family and appears to be in good health. Upon seeing her mother for the first time in 18 years, Dugard, who had her two daughters with her, greeted her by saying, “Hi Mom, I have babies.” Both mother and daughter are trying to avoid the public eye for now.

What is shocking about this story is the fact that Garrido managed to elude authorities for this crime for so long. There were many missed opportunities to uncover the truth.

As a parolee, Garrido was subject to routine surprise home visits. The last visit was conducted in July, 2008.

In 2006, a neighbor called 911 describing Garrido as a psychotic sex addict who was living with children and had people staying in tents in his backyard.

An officer questioned Garrido on his front porch, but didn’t go into the house or the backyard. Before leaving, he warned that the tents could be a code violation.

Paramedics had also been called to the house five times since 1999, to help Garrido’s 88-year-old mother.

Jaycee’s stepfather, a longtime suspect in her disappearance, was frustrated to learn that a car matching the description he gave police the day he saw Dugard kidnapped was found in the yard of the Garrido home. Nancy Garrido also fits the “dead on” description he gave of the woman who pulled her into the car.

Phillip Garrido gave a phone interview from jail on Thursday, telling a KCRA-TV reporter that he had turned his life around since the birth of his first daughter 15 years ago.

“I tell you here’s the story of what took place at this house, and you’re going to be absolutely impressed. It’s a disgusting thing that took place from the end to the beginning. But I turned my life completely around,” he said.

BOSTON, Massachusetts (CNN) — Sen. Edward M. Kennedy's son Ted Jr. remembered him as a man who 'never stopped trying to right wrongs' at his funeral Mass Saturday at Boston's Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica — Boston's famed 'Mission Church.'

'My father was not perfect, but he believed in redemption,' he said.

'Although it hasn't been easy at times to live with this name, I have never been more proud of it than I am today,' Ted Jr. said.

He said his father had made light of his failure to become president, despite the weight of expectations on him as a Kennedy.

'I don't mind not being president, I just mind that someone else is,' he quoted his father as saying.

The funeral began with a hearse bearing Kennedy's body through Boston rain from the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library to Mission Church. A military honor guard carried the coffin through a sea of black umbrellas into the church."

2009 Fantasy Football: cheat sheets for your league | iNewsCatcher

: "It's that time of the year again. Time for Fantasy Football. But what is Fantasy Football and what are (printable) Fantasy Football cheat sheets that everyone is going gaga about on the web as of this writing? For this, we have Wikipedia to the rescue with this short overview: 'Fantasy football is a fantasy sports game in which participants (called 'owners') are arranged into a league. The person who creates the league is called the commissioner, and that person invites other owners into his/her league. Each team drafts or acquires via auction a team of real-life American football players and then scores points based on those
players' statistical on-the-field performances. A typical fantasy league will employ players from a single football league, such as the NFL or an NCAA division. Leagues can be arranged in which the winner is the team with the most total points at the end of the season, or in a head-to-head format (which mirrors the actual NFL) in which each team plays against a single opponent each week. At the end of the year, win-loss records determine league rankings or qualification into a playoff bracket. Most leagues set aside the last weeks of the regular season for their own playoffs.'"
