Helicopter carrying six collides with plane over Hudson River

A tour helicopter hit a small plane and both crashed outside Hoboken, New Jersey with debris falling into the Hudson River, police reported on Saturday.

There was no immediate report on casualties. CNN said the helicopter had six people aboard.

Search and rescue crews were in the area, which is just across the Hudson from New York City. Fox TV said one survivor had been pulled from the river.

The helicopter was operated by Liberty Tours, local media said.

In January, a US Airways jet with more than 150 people on board crashed into the frigid Hudson River off Manhattan after apparently hitting a flock of geese. All aboard survived.

How does Criss Angel walk on water?

How does Criss Angel walk on water?

Criss Angel wore shoes when he walked on water across one length of a swimming pool. One disbeliever swam under the water to see how Criss Angel walked on water. People thought there was something under his feet for him to step on. Criss Angel discarded his shoes and he carried on walking on water until he reached the other end of the pool.

Criss Angel appeared to concentrate hard as he placed one foot slowly over another foot as he walked on water. There did not seem to be any support under his feet. The lower half of his trouser legs became wet as some water splashed onto them. His shoes did not do the trick as even after he dropped his shoes into the pool, he continued walking on water until he reached the side of the pool.

If people suspected that Criss Angel was suspended from above by invisible wires, or that the video taping was faked, these allegations were not visible in the YouTube video.

Maybe, just maybe, Criss Angel used a nylon or steel cable that was strung across to walk on the support. His weight did depress his shoes and they were seen getting wet.

Holograms You Can Touch.

PopSci: “Tokyo Scientists Create Touchable Hologram.” “Using ultrasonic waves to provide the resistance and tactile presence, the hologram simulates the sensation of rain drops or a small ball, all without interfering with the projected 3-D image. A couple of Wiimotes provide the tracking, and the programing provides the fun.”

ReadWriteWeb: “Prepare Yourselves: Augmented Reality Hype on the Rise.” “Augmented reality — or the addition of a layer to the world before your eyes (aka the “real world”) using technology — is the next big tech trend. Already making its debut in everything from mobile apps to kids toys, ‘AR’ will clearly soon be talked about by everyone the way they used to talk about “social media” and “Web 2.0″ before that. While augmented reality has its uses — although many of them just involve oohing and aahing at nifty apps — this trend is already in danger of being over-hyped, even though it has barely gotten off the ground.”

Economic Suicide and the ABC's of Deprssion

The 'pump' part of the government orchastrated 'pump and dump' is almost over. The stock market 'dump' is getting close at hand.

The following article is by Ty Andros

Many analysts are calling an end to the recession. No way, we are only in a countertrend bounce in economic activity before the next leg DOWN. One has to look no further than the incredible bounces of 50% or more in markets halfway to the lows from 1929 to 1933, or in post-bubble Japan since 1989 to see the parallels. The social welfare states of the G7 and their spawn known as FIAT currency and credit financial systems have just masked the unfolding death of their economies. As public serpents, er...servants implement their plans for MISERY SPREAD WIDELY, also known as SOCIALISM, which forces more and more desperate voters into their grasp.

PALIN QUOTE ON HEALTH CARE

I saw a Palin quote on several news website headlines, but did not read the stories. But the words were very emotional: "Obama's Health Bill Is Going to Kill My Baby." Anne Althouse has put the quote into the context of her statement and it appears that Palin is raising a legitimate issue. The end-of-life issue and the health care bill need to be debated, but a number of commentators or news sites don't want to debate it so they just stereotype Palin.

GI Joe Movie Review:

With the recent release of the new action movie “GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra,” moviegoers may be wondering if it is worth going to watch or not. And although I think it looks really good from the trailers I’ve seen, some people might just have different opinions.

According to newsok.com, the movie is loosely based on the Real American Hero action figure line that was originally introduced in 1983. But apparently, the Joes no longer just represent the American military, but they are also a secret NATO organization.

The movie sees Army buddies Duke, who’s played by Channing Tatum and Ripcord, who’s played by Marlon Wayans, join forces with the elite military unit called GI Joe, which is apparently led by General Hawk, who is played by Dennis Quaid.

The film tries to explain the connections between the characters by flashbacks along the way. And the characters don’t seem to gain much depth throughout the film. One review has said that the movie is full of action to start, but does wear thin in the last hour.

Lady Gaga Hermaphrodite Picture Ignites Internet Rumor

Lady Gaga is known for a lot of things. For instance, she is known for being a talented singer-songwriter and an enormously entertaining performer. She is also known for having a killer pair of legs. But now she is starting to become known for something a little bit more controversial.
Lady Gaga Hermaphrodite Picture Ignites Internet Rumor
Now there is a rumor floating around the blogosphere that Lady Gaga is a hermaphrodite. And the lady Gaga hermaphrodite picture is fueling the rumors and speculation. Indeed, the Lady Gaga hermaphrodite picture has got some people thinking that Lady Gaga actually is a hermaphrodite; the Lady Gaga hermaphrodite picture is causing some to believe that Lady Gaga was born with both male and female genitalia.

As the Inquisitr notes, the Lady Gaga hermaphrodite picture does show something rather suspicious between her legs - something that might indicate that Lady Gaga could be a hermaphrodite. The Lady Gaga hermaphrodite picture was taken from a video shot at the Glastonbury festival in England, and, according to the Inquisitr, the source video confirms that the Lady Gaga hermaphrodite picture has not been doctored.

Michael Crabtree going down a dangerous path

In a nation that often seems to lack the principle historically required from its great and just people, it is reassuring to see that, once again, a select few are willing to stand up and fight for what is righteous.

First, on Wednesday, we learned that Paula Abdul, our modern-day John Adams, is walking away from American Idol after the show refused to pay her more than $5 million per season. Then, one day later, Michael Crabtree, the San Francisco 49ers' recent first-round pick and a sure-handed, slow-afoot J.J Stokes impersonator, insisted he is more than willing to skip the entire season and re-enter the draft should San Francisco not meet his demands -- believed to be in the range of $23 million guaranteed.

For those of you who automatically pooh-pooh the so-called greed of folks like Abdul and Crabtree, I say -- Have you no decency? This, my friends, is not greed. Not indulgence. Not covetousness. Not selfishness and not piggishness.

No, this is just plain old stupidity.

Twins Acquire Carl Pavano

The Twins deepened their rotation today, acquiring Carl Pavano from the Indians for a player to be named later, according to a team press release. Pavano, 33, has allowed 150 hits in 125.2 innings, posting a respectable 88K/23BB ratio.

His base salary is just $1.5MM, but in addition to the $500k remaining on his contract, Pavano stands to earn a lot through incentives. If he makes 10 more starts and averages 6.0 IP per outing, he'll make another $1.75 in bonuses. We heard yesterday that the Indians expect to lose $16MM this year, but they'll receive some relief if the Twins are paying the rest of Pavano's contract.

Mel Martinez surprises with resignation

Florida Sen. Mel Martinez, a native Cuban and former chairman of the Republican National Committee, announced that he will step down from his Senate seat to pursue a career in the private sector, shocking his Senate colleagues and adding a new twist in the race to replace him.

Martinez, 62, has long insisted that he wouldn’t resign before his term ends in 2011, when he had already planned to retire. But citing personal reasons, the Florida Republican told supporters in Orlando, that he will be resigning after Gov. Charlie Crist names his successor.

“My priorities have always been my faith, my family and my country and at this stage in my life, and after nearly twelve years of public service in Florida and Washington, it’s time I return to Florida and my family,” Martinez said.

He added that he was not pressured to step down before his term expired.

“This is a free country. I did this on my own free will. There’s no reason – this is just my desire to move on and get on with the rest of my life,” Martinez said.

The 30-year-old Burgess, who is in the final year of a five-year deal, carries a $2 million base salary for 2009.

He had been boycotting Raiders training camp to try to force the Raiders to give him a new deal, release him or trade him.

Tamiflu-resistant swine flu found on US-Mexico border

A strain of swine flu that is resistant to treatment with the drug Tamiflu has been discovered near the US-Mexican border, the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) said on Monday.

"We have found resistance to Tamiflu on the border. We have observed some cases, few to be sure, in El Paso and close to McAllen, Texas," said Maria Teresa Cerqueira, head of the local PAHO office.

Cases of A(H1N1) that were resistant to the anti-viral medicine have now been found in the United States, Canada, Denmark, Hong Kong and Japan.

Experts gathered in La Jolla, California on Monday to discuss the response to the outbreak, said the resistance was likely due to overuse of antivirals like Tamiflu.

"In the United States Tamiflu is sold with a prescription, but in Mexico and Canada it is sold freely and taken at the first sneeze. Then, when it is really needed, it doesn't work," said Cerqueira.

Roche, the manufacturer of Tamiflu, has said it expects a 0.5 percent rate of case resistance based on clinical trials.more...

postal regulatory commission

WASHINGTON — The neighborhood post office is facing major changes as postal officials consider closings or consolidating services at hundreds of locations across the United States.

The Postal Service has been struggling with a sharp decline in mail volume as people and businesses switch to e-mail both for personal contact and bill paying. The agency is facing a nearly $7 billion potential loss this fiscal year despite a 2-cent increase in the price of stamps in May, cuts in staff and removal of collection boxes.

Post officials sent a list of nearly 700 potential candidates for closing or consolidation to the independent Postal Regulatory Commission for review. More may be added, but the current list of candidates can be viewed at the commission's Web site, http://www.prc.gov

Some of the offices could be closed while others could have some of their functions consolidated with other offices. For example, in some cases preparing mail for delivery may be shifted from Office A to nearby Office B, but the first office might still offer such services as selling stamps and mailing parcels and letters. In other cases one of the offices might be closed.

Postal Vice President Jordan Small told a congressional subcommittee that local managers will study activities of approximately 3,200 stations and branches across the country and consider factors such as customer access, service standards, cost savings, impact on employees, environmental impact, real estate values and long-term Postal Service needs.

No changes are expected before the end of the current fiscal year on Sept. 30. There are 32,741 post offices.

"We anticipate that out of these 3,200 stations and branches, under 1,000 offices could be considered as viable candidates to study further," Small said.

In addition to the switch of business to the Internet, the recession has hurt the post office by reducing advertising mail. Last year's high gas prices also siphoned millions of dollars from its coffers.

Just last week the Government Accountability Office added the Postal Service to its list of troubled agencies, saying serious and significant structural financial challenges face the agency.

"Every major postal policy, from employee pay, to days of delivery, to the closing of postal facilities must be on the table. Without major change, the day will soon come when the Postal Service will be unable to pay its bills," GAO said.

Congress is considering a bill to change the way the post office funds its retiree health benefits over the next two years that could save it $2 billion annually.

The post office also filed a petition with the independent Postal Regulatory Commission indicating that managers are looking at closing many post offices to save money.

In addition, Postmaster General John Potter has asked Congress for permission to reduce mail deliveries from six days a week to five.

Last year, mail volume fell by 9.5 billion pieces to a total of 203 billion pieces. It is expected to fall by 28 billion pieces this year to a total of 175 billion pieces.

cash for clunkers bill

Finally, some members of Congress are speaking out against a no-questions-asked extension of the Cash for Clunkers bill.

Now it’s up to the U.S. Senate to slow things down and pass a better measure than the U.S. House approved last week.

The House decided to pour $2 billion into the program with the same overly attractive — and taxpayer-costly — $4,500 reward to motorists trading in an older, low-mileage vehicle.

The better decision would be to keep the clunkers program rolling, with less of a benefit — around $2,000 a vehicle.

Of course, some Republicans say they want to kill the whole thing right now, that the original $1 billion invested in the plan was enough money.

Yes, it was a large sum. And spending another $2 billion would be yet another expense our grandkids will have to pay off.

However, that cost could be be worthwhile — if Congress changes the rules and puts a more restrictive deal in front of vehicle owners.

Many will still come forward to pay for a new car, that will get more mileage and pollute less. Both are good things.

But the next stage of “Cash for Clunkers” definitely should not offer excessive amounts of taxpayer dollars to woo people to take those new vehicles off the showroom floors. Source

FLAGSTAFF - Cardinals receiver Early Doucet suffered a sprained left shoulder while making a diving grab of a pass thrown by Matt Leinart on Monday morning.

The Cardinals said Doucet will undergo an MRI exam.

Doucet, a third-round pick in 2008, struggled through his rookie season, hindered by a hamstring injury suffered at training camp.

He is competing to climb the depth chart enough to be active on Sundays. It's a difficult task because the Cardinals have four established receivers ahead of Doucet: Larry Fitzgerald, Anquan Boldin, Steve Breaston and Jerheme Urban.
